Many thanks to all who helped to organize and serve at our annual parish meeting. Special thanks to Alicia Laddon for arranging the menu and cooking brunch for so many people. We heard reports summarizing our activites in 2011 and our financial status going in to the new year. We also elected four new members to the Vestry: Virginia Chirchirillo, Pat Johnston, Glenn Lagrange and Victor Lopez, Jr. Jean Shahnasarian was appointed Senior Warden, succeeding Rick Ermish, who has completed his term.

Sometimes Annual Chili Cookoff 2012

Last Saturday was a great night - we had 19 chilis enter the competition. There were also great side dishes and desserts. There was something for everyone to enjoy.

We named winners in three categories:

CHAMPION CHILI. Chili #14, made by Janette Dadlani, won by a landslide. Janette gets the Chili Trophy.

The other two competitions were very close races:

MOST ORIGINAL. The winner by three votes was #5, a white chili made by Keri Grosso. Runner up was Rick Ermish (hey, at least he received votes this year!)

HOTTEST CHILI. Chili #1, made by Pat Johnston, brought the pain and won by five votes. Runner up was Angela Beckles.

Thank you everyone who participated and made this another memorable parish event.

2012 Vestry Nominees

Cathy Casas

I was born a Presbyterian with a Southern Baptist mother. I was raised with the King James and Revised Standard Version Bibles. I met Mike while working for Hardee’s in high school and married right after college. We’ve been all over the world, settling in Tampa after 22 years of Army life. Mike was chosen by the Army to go to Georgia Tech to study for a master’s and I was also able to get an MBA from Tech. I worked as a computer programmer/system analyst during most of that journey.

I’ve had an ‘interesting’ religious journey. Race, gender, political corruption, 9/11, and Earl have been the defining separators on this journey. I’ll detail ‘Earl’ because that’s what brought me to St. Mark’s. I was a member of the St. Christopher’s Bishop’s Committee that closed the church. Earl Fielder, our beloved Sr. Warden, asked that we give St. Mark’s a chance. I did and that has been one of the biggest blessings of my life. What diversity; what love. It was what I’d been searching for my whole life and didn’t know it.

I love Pentecost with all the languages. I love all the shades of people, worshiping together. I love that we can disagree, but in the end, still love and support one another.

I have always enjoyed serving in the church (I’m currently the VP of the Daughters of the King and manage the Book Table) and feel blest and honored to have been asked to run for Vestry. If elected, I’m sure that my background and church experience will allow me to provide support to the St Mark’s community.

Virginia Chirchirillo

Please know that I’m honored to be one of the nominees being considered to serve our congregation. Let me tell you a little about myself. I moved to Tampa in 2000, after resigning from a twenty-six year career in the insurance industry. Having broken through the proverbial “glass ceiling” in two different careers and having owned a business, I had achieved all that I had wanted from the business community. A longing to turn my life anew became my quest and the time was ripe for change.

Guided by the Lord, I sold the business and most of my possessions. I envisioned a new life in Tampa, as a healthy and prosperous retiree, stronger in my faith, singing in a church choir, golfing, doing philanthropic work, having good friends and living close to my family. In the past twelve years, I’ve met the right people at the right time and have nurtured a large part of my vision as a member of St. Mark’s, by participating in Bible study; Cursillo; co-working with Cathy as Choir Librarians; co-leading the music of Wednesday’s service with Sherre, Laura Jeanne and Judy; writing notes of “congratulations on the 1^st anniversary of your baptism" with Dale and Joan; and with much support and encouragement, it was my joy and privilege to spearhead St. Mark’s first Community Carol Sing-A-Long in December.

For the past three years, I’ve enjoyed being President of the Rocky Point Women’s Golf Association, Inc., where I’ve been instrumental in revising By-Law’s and encouraging women in golf. I serve Hillsborough County by participating on the Advisory Board of the Tampa Sports Authority. I’ve a history of philanthropy and volunteering, most thankful to have been a part of the Connecticut Hospice Volunteer Program. So grateful for having been a part of worthwhile organization’s boards, committees and fundraising efforts in NYC, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Tampa.

Marva Duncan

I am originally from Jamaica, and I was raised in the Anglican faith. After completing college in 1986 I immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts. I started my US career at State Street Bank & Trust Co. as an Account Controller then later a Portfolio Administrator in the Mutual Fund Division. In 1990, I chased the sunshine to Florida to be closer to my family in Jamaica, and again worked in the Investment Banking division of First Florida Bank and Trust Co. From December of 1993 to the present I have worked with Franklin Templeton Investments Ltd.

My early work with the church began at St. Savior Anglican Church in St. Catherine, Jamaica where I served on the Finance committee and Re-building committee prior to migrating. While here at St. Marks I was honored to have served on the Vestry from 2001- 2004, during the planning and building stages of the current location.

In 1990, I transferred my membership from St Paul Episcopal Church (Brockton, MA) and I have been a member of St. Mark’s since the summer of 1990, I feel very blessed to have raised my son Aaron here. He was Baptized and Confirmed here at St. Mark’s; he is now attending Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.

My husband Ken and I attend the 10:15 mass, and I am honored to be nominated for the Vestry. If given the opportunity, I look forward to serving our congregation faithfully to the best of my ability and help with the continuous growth of our church.

Sandi Gaudet

As was my husband Michael, I was raised in Massachusetts as a Roman Catholic. Mike joined the Episcopal Church after his first marriage and shortly after Michael and I married in 1997 I joined the Episcopal Church, here at St. Mark’s. I have three children and Mike has two and we have five grandchildren. Two of our children and two of our grandchildren live in Florida; the others are in Massachusetts and Georgia.

At St. Marks, I have been involved in the Lay Ministry as both an Acolyte and a Eucharistic Minister for the past four years. Also, I serve on the Flower Guild, preparing the flowers for the altar.

I attended nine years of Parochial school, then high school and college. I have work experience in a variety of positions in business administration in several industries; currently, and for the past fourteen years, I have worked as Executive Assistant to the Executive Vice President at Catalina Marketing Corporation.

Mike and I, for the past eleven years, have sponsored our annual ‘Christmas for Kids’ fundraiser to benefit local charities. To date we have raised several thousands of dollars and several thousands of gifts from those homeless or suffering from child abuse.

I have served the Episcopal Church as a missionary in the Dominican Republic where my husband and I construct multi-function buildings in impoverished areas that serve as schools, churches, community centers, and clinics.

For many years, at work, I have been involved in an organizational capacity with the ‘Junior Achievement Bowl-a-thon’ and the ‘Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk-a-thon’, and am active in several other charities.

In addition to my various charity work, I enjoy spending time with my family, travel, gardening (especially bromeliads and orchids), and making custom jewelry.

Mike and I have been blessed to have St. Mark’s and all the wonderful people in the congregation as an important part of our lives. I am honored to be considered for the Vestry at St. Mark’s. If chosen to serve, I will utilize my skills to the best of my ability to further benefit our church and community.

Pat Johnston

I was born in Falmouth, Jamaica; educated at Westwood High School, then on to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, England, where I studied and became a radiation therapist. I returned home and worked for five years before I was recruited by Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. From there it was on to Howard University Hospital in D. C. I got married, went on to Richmond, Virginia and worked at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. In August 1983, I was given the miracle of my son, Jonathan and he became my reason for getting up every day. Right after his birth, we moved to Columbia, Maryland where I continued my career at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson. I began attending Christ Episcopal Church in Columbia, I was raised Baptist but had a long-lasting love affair with the Anglican Church. My second miracle, my daughter Rachael, was born and then baptized at Christ Episcopal and right after we moved to Florida in August 1988. I found St. Mark’s.

Neighbours in my new home were attendees, loved the church, I needed a church home, so I, my five year old and my baby girl visited. At the time, St. Mark’s was going through its interim period before a new priest was hired, so I’ve been fortunate to have been around for many changes in our church life. I was received here and had the great fortune to be of service too. I taught Sunday School for a couple of years, coordinated Lenten soup suppers for a few years, I am a Eucharistic Minister and I have the pleasure of singing in the Choir. My children have been acolytes and in Christmas pageants. My daughter has been in the junior choir and a regular helper with VBS. Both my children were confirmed at St. Mark’s and my daughter who is a first-year medical student in still active here. My son lives and works in New York and is happy there. I work as a dosimetrist in radiation therapy at the Cancer Center of Pasco-Pinellas where I’ve been for twenty years.

I have been blessed to have served on our Vestry at times which have been milestones in our congregation. I was there when we welcomed Father Ed to our family, and again when we found the land and broke ground for our current address. Unforgettable times.

This year promises to be a remarkable one and whereas being on the Vestry would make my service to St. Mark’s a great honour, being a part of this church family is a true blessing. Thank you.

Ken Karnig

I joined St. Marks 15 years ago and feel very blessed to be a part of our religious community. My initial undertaking was being involved with the coffee hour or kitchen duty in the “old” church. After that I was honored to become active as a Eucharistic Minister and Lay Reader at the 8 a.m. service. I served on the Vestry several years ago during the acquisition period of land for our new church and the sale of the land to the County for our Lowell Road location.

I am a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster PA with an accounting degree and received my MBA in Finance from the University of Miami, Miami FL – go Canes. My career started at Bankers Trust in New York City which took me to banking in Miami Fl and then to becoming Director of Credit Operations at GTE Leasing in Tampa. For the past several years I have been actively selling real estate with my wife, Hazel, and am affiliated with Keller Williams Realty Tampa Central. In addition to a 45 year marriage, I am the proud Dad to Vanessa and Ken and my six year old grandson, Joey.

I look forward to being a part of the Vestry at St. Mark’s and being in God’s service.

Glenn Lagrange

My name is Glenn Lagrange.

My wife Pat and I have been married for 36 years and we have 1 daughter. We moved to Tampa in 1988 from Opelousas, LA a small town in the heart of what is known as “Cajun Country”. While in Opelousas I was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council serving as the Financial Secretary.

We were members of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tampa before finding our home here at St. Marks 6 years ago. We were welcomed by and felt an immediate connection with our fellow parishioners at the 8am service. I am a member of the men’s group here at St. Marks.

I am a partner in an Aerospace Manufacturing company that makes component parts for the aerospace and defense of our country. My duties include purchasing, accounting, safety and IT. I’m involved in a Professional national organization that promotes the manufacturing industries in the United States.

While our daughter attended Gaither High School, I was a member of the band booster club for 3 years, serving as president for 2.

For several years I have been a servant leader at the Metropolitan Ministries holiday center. Other civic involvements includes Paint your heart out Tampa and a board member of our homeowners association.

I am a “graduate” of the 2008 Docent class at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo and am a mentor to a 2009 class member.

My hobbies are golf, photography, gardening, camping and trying to stay in shape.

Victor Lopez, Jr.

My name is Victor E. Lopez, and I’m very thankful to be nominated for the vestry of St. Mark’s.

I was born (and raised) in Tampa in the glory days of the early 80s. I attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and graduated with a BA in Geography with a concentration in urban planning.

After college, I moved back to Tampa and began working for C.Q. Insulation (an insulation company, funnily enough). I started out on the logistics side of the TECO and Progress Energy Home Retrofit Efficiency programs, and now work in estimating and sales having worn a variety of hats in between. Outside of work I love playing ice hockey and attending Tampa Bay Lightning games.

Moving on, I have been a member of the Episcopal church my entire life, attending St. Andrew’s downtown and then St. Christopher’s in Town and Country. I began going to St. Mark’s regularly in 2007, and have found myself involved (both in support and leadership roles) in a handful of ministries: the youth group, Sunday school, and the Thursday Night Bible Study (ask me for details if you’re interested in attending).

African Team Ministries Sales

Each year in Advent we host sales of crafts and jewelry made by East African artisans. The children of this summer's Vacation Bible School shared the songs from Hometown Nazareth with everyone in Sunday morning. First Communion for Young Members of St. Mark's

For several weeks, a number of our young members have been attending a Preparation for Communion Class during Sunday School. They learned about the meaning and importance of the Holy Eucharist as they planned to take their share in Communion for the first time on Pentecost. Last Sunday they had a special session of their class in which they baked bread which they then presented at the altar for consecration.

After a short prayer, everyone took turns adding ingredients.

New Equipment - Long Live Sunday Breakfast!

We had to say goodbye to our giant iron stove after its many, many years of service. We replaced it with an updated and more spacious grill, and a stand-alone four burner cooktop. Both will serve us for many years to come, with greater fuel-efficiency than the old stove.

Octogenarian and Nonagenarian Tea Party

The “Nonagenarian/Octogenarian” tea was held on Saturday, May 21. About 60 were in attendance all together. Cathy Cole played music from earlier eras on the piano, and Gwen Givens sang, accompanied by Michael Crane. On April 10 everyone in the 10:10 service made Resurrection Rolls, as a way to understand the miracle of the Easter story. Marshmallows were rolled in butter and brown sugar, then wrapped in a crescent roll and baked. There were some surprised looks when the rolls were opened -- there was nothing inside! Where was that marshmallow?

2nd Annual Choir Festival, and Choir Recordings

The St. Petersburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists presented its 2nd Annual Choral Festival last Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg. The featured work was Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, sung by combined area choirs (including St. Mark’s), under the direction of Tom Lippert, with Robert Todd at the organ. The Requiem and other works were performed in memory of Ric Dale, who organized the first St. Pete AGO Choral Festival. Our Organist and Choirmaster, Dr. J. Archbishop Livingstone Nkoyoyo from Uganda preached for us at our Noon service on Ash Wednesday, March 9. He met with The Rev. Martha Vaguener, and Elaine and Harris Humphreys. Elaine and Harris continue to organize the sponsorship of Ugandan orphans by St. Mark's parishioners. Sponsors send the tuition necessary for Ugandan children to finish their educations despite not having parents to support them.

Memorial Garden Development

The first phase of the Memorial Garden/Columbarium got underway with the landscaping of the Cain Road side of the property. A hedge with trees and low plantings is beginning to grow that will frame the end of the Church grounds. The next phase will be to connect the walkway from the Church courtyard to the center of the area where the Memorial Garden will be located.

A few of us have returned from a weekend at Dayspring for the New Beginnings retreat for middle schoolers! Katie Frost, Brooke Woods and Joelys Cruz had a great time meeting new friends from around the diocese and learning about God's love. The focus of the weekend was on relationships, starting with our families, friends, the church to God. We learned about the Lord's Prayer, made up and acted skits about Bible stories or principles, shared Warm Fuzzies, and so much more. We prayed for each other and had fun. And the chaperones ("the Wise Guys") had as much fun as the youth! Next New Beginnings is in October.... Let's have a big group next time!

Our new Sr. Warden had an active Sunday morning on February 13th. He gave Fr. Thomas Williams a five-pound Hershey bar as a thank you from the parish for all of the time and talent that he contributes. Rick also donned his Mardi Gras crown and beads to drum up excitement about the upcoming chili cook-off on Saturday, March 5th. Enjoy bowls full of chili (and then a stack of pancakes on March 8th) for the Last Blast Before the Fast. Ash Wednesday is March 9th.

Our Annual Meeting was held on January 30. We elected four members to serve on the vestry for 3 years: Don Barker, Laura Jeanne Johnson, Matt Sammon, and Jean Shahnasarian. Don Barker

Mary and I were married in 1950 in Lancaster, Ohio and raised our three sons in Lancaster. An Episcopalian since 1948, I have served on vestries at St. John's, Lancaster and St. Christopher's, Tampa; and would be honored to serve and represent the members of St. Mark's.

Mary and I were transferred to Tampa in 1994, as employees of Anchor Glass Container. Mary was in the financial department while I worked as a Mechanical Engineer, until retirement in 1994.

We have been blessed with the Spiritual Leadership and Friends since we transferred to St. Mark's in 2000, especially during our recent health problems. May God continue to bless everyone and their extended Families here at St. Mark's.

Fran Baylies - Weissing

I have been a member of St. Mark’s since about 1990. I raised my two children in St. Mark’s and am overjoyed to see my grandchildren following in that same path.

I am currently a Lay Eucharist Minister and serve on the Altar Guild. I served on the vestry during the time period that we selected our lovely new site, but regretfully had to resign midway due to a scheduling conflict with my master’s degree program.

I am employed as an administrator with the Department of Children and Families and manage a regional group of approximately 100 employees. Next December, I will be retiring from employment with state government after 35 years. I currently serve on the Executive Board of the Service Provider Area Network (SPAN) through Metropolitan Ministries, and am DCF’s representative on Hillsborough County’s Emergency Operations Committee.

My husband Lou and I live in Land O Lakes. I have always been a volunteer and consider it an honor to be asked to run for the vestry.

Laura Jeanne Johnson

I am currently a Choir Member, Acolyte, Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Mark's, and serve at the 8:00 and 10:15 services. I am a life long Episcopalian, born and raised in New York, NY. I am a widowed mother of four, with twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. I’m also a Singer/Actress, Portrait Artist and Crafter. In January of 2010, I performed at St. Mark's first Jazz Cabaret and the second Cabaret for 2011 is in the planning stages.

Prior to moving to Tampa in 2007, I attended the Church of the Ascension in Rockville Centre, NY for 14 years. In addition to singing in the choir and serving as a Eucharistic Minister there, I served on the vestry for two terms. I was also a delegate to the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island's Convention three times and an alternate once. I am a Cursillista, having attended Long Island Cursillo Weekend #64, and served as a team member on Weekend #72.

in 2004 and 2006, I served as co-chairperson for The Church of the Ascension’s bi-annual Friendship Fair, a major fundraising event . In addition, I was co-founder and producer of The Church of the Ascension's Black History Month cultural program of events for two consecutive years before leaving NY and moving to Tampa. I also produced and performed in the Ascension Jazz Cabaret, which became an annual fundraising event for the church.

I am honored to have been asked to run for the vestry at St. Mark's, and I look forward to continuing to serve wherever my talents are useful.

Glenn Lagrange

My wife Pat and I have been married for 34 years and we have 1 daughter. We moved to Tampa in 1988 from Opelousas, LA a small town in the heart of what is known as “Cajun Country”. While in Opelousas I was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council serving as the Financial Secretary.

We were members of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tampa before finding our home here at St. Marks 4 years ago. We were welcomed by and felt an immediate connection with our fellow parishioners at the 8am service. I am a member of the men’s group here at St. Marks.

While our daughter attended Gaither High School, I was a member of the band booster club for 3 years, serving as president for 2.

For several years I have been a servant leader at the Metropolitan Ministries holiday center. Other civic involvements include Paint your heart out Tampa and a past board member of our homeowners association.

I am a “graduate” of the 2008 Docent class at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo and am a mentor to a 2009 class member.

My hobbies are golf, photography, gardening, camping and trying to stay in shape.

I would like to thank you for your consideration as a member of the Vestry. If elected to this position I will perform my duty as per the policies of the church.

Rebecca O'Malley

I joined St Mark’s Church about twenty years ago. Very shortly after that I joined the choir and have been singing with them happily ever since! I have truly enjoyed all the things I have participated in at St Mark’s and the church has become an integral part of my life.

Professionally I have worked at the University of South Florida , just recently retiring after thirty-three years of service as a faculty member in the Chemistry Department. My work has involved teaching, research and service – with the overall aim of helping people develop their skills and attain their professional goals.

On the personal side I am the proud mother of three grown-up children. While they were growing up I was very involved with their extracurricular activities, being a band mom, cross country team mom, drama club mom etc.

I feel very fortunate to be a member of the St. Mark’s community and it has been exciting to be involved in the Church’s journey from the Casey Road site to the Cain Road site and being part of all the accompanying developments. When I look at the present St Mark’s – it is just amazing! If elected to the vestry I look forward to being directly involved in maintaining all the progress made, while planning for and participating in the future of this wonderful Church Community.

Matt Sammon

Every day I see God's gifts right in front of me: my wife of five years, Jennifer. My one-year-old son, Patrick. My job as manager of radio programming with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Among other things, there's also my wonderful family, friends, and my time here at St. Mark's.

I was born in Fairport, New York, but raised in Seffner, Florida, as part of a classic Catholic family (run with that line any way you want to). After returning from college at the University of Alabama, I grew tired of the Catholic church and at times thought I knew better than God. Adrift spiritually for a few years, I decided to go along with my wife to a service at St. Mark's about three years ago because she wasn't going to have a child not baptized in a church. I agreed with her rationale. God's rationale was very different.

From the very first service we attended, we were welcome as if we were known by everybody for years. And over the next few months, my eyes were once again opened to all of the blessings that God has given me, even though I had shut my eyes to them for several years before. And yes, our son was baptized at St. Mark's to fulfill our plans, while we were essentially baptized again by God's plans.

We are members of the Young Adult Bible Study group, and I am an assistant scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 9 which meets at St. Mark's. I would thoroughly enjoy being a member of the St. Mark's vestry as well, as one representative of the next generation of Episcopalian leaders.

Jean Shahnasarian

Soon after turning 50, I realized that I have been worshipping in the pews of St. Mark’s Church during my 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and, now, in my 50’s. St. Mark’s has been significant in my life in many ways. The church has been my family’s spiritual home for all these years!

I earned a degree in finance from Purdue University, and furthered my education at Florida State University, thereafter obtaining my CPA license. My work experience has included systems consulting with Arthur Andersen & Co in Chicago and a regional accounting firm in Tallahassee, and serving as the accounting manager at The Tampa Tribune. During the past 20 years, I have been the Treasurer of my husband’s psychology practice, Career Consultants of America.

My service as a member of St. Mark’s during the past 22 years has included Vacation Bible School teacher, Sunday school teacher, audit committee member, greeter, and coffee hour volunteer. Also, during the past decade, I have chaired the finance committee (maybe because no one else has wanted the position!). Our family has supported St. Mark’s Uganda students and Dominican Republican ministries for many years. Outside of St. Mark’s, I have served on several school boards and chaired many different committees (e.g., fundraising, project management, event coordination).

Involvement in St. Mark’s has been important to my entire family. My husband, Mike, previously served on the St. Mark’s Vestry and as Senior Warden in 1997. Our three children (Eddy, Lexy, and Lizzy) have served as acolytes, Lay Eucharist Ministers, and vergers over the years; I feel blessed to have watched their spiritual development at St. Mark’s.

I have yet to serve on the Vestry and feel called to this ministry. If you choose to elect me, I would be honored to serve.

Over 150 Convention Delegates from the Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg Deaneries gathered to prepare for the Diocesan Convention in October. St. Mark’s parishioner Anne Vickers, Chief Financial Officer of the diocese, addressed the assembly on budget issues. The Diocesan Convention will be held October 8th and 9th in Punta Gorda. Members of Troop 9 helped sort donations.

The COGs struck again on August 22nd with their second coordinated outreach day and it was a great success. The COGs are the Community Outreach Groups of St. Mark's, and this time they collected canned food. The effort was planned to coincide with the Bloodmobile's scheduled visit. We had the best turnout for blood donations that we have seen in years. There were 25 donors this time; we usually have 14-18. You might not have known that there was a competition between the 8 o'clockers and the 10:15 crowd to see who would produce more donors. The jury is still out on whether to judge by raw numbers or percentage of attendees...we'll let you know the results, we know you can't wait. Thank you to all who helped with the outreach day, and coordinating the food donations with Metropolitan Ministries.

Vacation Bible School 2010

VBS this year was a ton of fun! This year's program was Egypt: Joseph's Journey from Prison to Palace. Here are a few photos to give you the flavor of the kids' experiences during VBS week. The children, assisted by teen and adult volunteers, made jewelry, learned hieroglyphics, painted T-shirts, and even wrapped mummies. Along the way, they learned Joseph's story and practiced prayer, and wrote down their "God sightings" - the evidence of God's presence in everyday life. The week finished up with an enthusiastic and humorous rendition of the songs they had learned during the week. Thank you to Marie Carlson for directing VBS this year, and to the many volunteers for making costumes and scenery, helping with crafts, leading music and games, teaching, preparing snacks, and keeping VBS running with high energy all week.
